The Corporate Social Opportunity
Corporate Social Impact Strategy & Consulting
3-year CSR roadmap built from the ground up. $250K software grant program launched in Year 1, targeting $1M by Year 3. Partnerships activated with the United Nations, Salk Laboratories, WildMe.org, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
THE CLIENT
Flatfile is a B2B SaaS company specializing in data onboarding — helping businesses move, clean, and normalize data at scale. When Thelemata engaged, Flatfile had a technically powerful product and a clear commercial trajectory.
THE CHALLENGE
Flatfile’s leadership understood that in a competitive B2B SaaS market, product alone isn’t the differentiator. They wanted social impact integrated into the business — not a PR footnote, but an engine that generated real ROI through brand visibility, talent acquisition, and warm business leads. The mandate: design a “Corporate Social Opportunity” strategy that converted Flatfile’s core technical capabilities into global-scale solutions, without siloing impact work from the company’s growth story.
THE STRATEGY
The insight Thelemata brought: Flatfile’s core capability — normalizing chaotic data — maps directly onto the biggest unsolved problems in environmental science, public health, humanitarian aid, and education. The company didn’t need a charity program. It needed a framework that positioned its software as infrastructure for the world’s most important data challenges. Thelemata framed Flatfile’s strategic adversary as entropy — chaos and uncertainty in data — and built every impact initiative around demonstrating, at the institutional level, what Flatfile’s technology could accomplish when aimed at problems that mattered. The talent acquisition angle was concrete: 64% of Millennials prioritize socially responsible employers, making a credible impact strategy a recruitment lever as well as a brand asset.
EXECUTION
Thelemata served as Interim Head of Impact, working directly with Flatfile’s CEO.
Impact Strategy and 3-Year Roadmap: Designed a comprehensive 3-year CSR roadmap operating on a single principle: do good in ways that generate measurable ROI. Built cross-functional workflows connecting Impact, Marketing, and Sales so every philanthropic initiative could become a case study, a PR opportunity, or a warm lead.
Flatfile Grant Program: Developed and managed a software grant program providing full or partial Flatfile access to mission-driven organizations. Year 1 target: $250,000 in software grants, scaling to $1M by Year 3. Initial grantees included Salk Laboratory’s Harnessing Plants Initiative (using Flatfile’s Portal Pro to normalize plant data for carbon-scrubbing climate research), WildMe.org (supporting the largest repository of animal conservation data in existence), and New Leaders in South Africa (tracking preschool registrations and education access across the continent).
CSV.org and Open Data: Spearheaded the vision and strategy for CSV.org — a free platform using Flatfile’s Concierge technology to normalize and serve the world’s public data to researchers and journalists globally. Facilitated Flatfile’s backing of the initiative and led collaboration to curate and serve public COVID-19 data via an open global data connection.
Government and Institutional Partnerships: Authored the “State Data Plan” — a strategic framework to help U.S. state governments accelerate progress in managing and normalizing public data, and developed a “State of State Data” report framework to build long-term government relationships. Initiated and managed relationships with the United Nations Environmental Peacebuilding Programme, IBM’s Traffik Analysis Hub, the U.S. State Department’s Trafficking In Persons Office, and the Director of Human Trafficking Programs at the U.S. Department of Justice.
RESULTS
3-Year CSR Roadmap: built and delivered to executive leadership. Software Grant Program: launched with $250K Year 1 target, scaling to $1M by Year 3.
Salk Laboratories: partnership activated for Harnessing Plants Initiative. WildMe.org: partnership activated for global animal conservation data. New Leaders (South Africa): software deployed for education access tracking. CSV.org: strategy built; COVID-19 open data pipeline established.
UN Partnership: Environmental Peacebuilding Programme relationship initiated. DOJ / State Dept.: direct relationships built with human trafficking program leaders. State Data Plan: authored and delivered.
THE TAKEAWAY
Flatfile had the technology to make a real difference in how the world manages data. Thelemata built the strategy to deploy it for social good — and structured every impact initiative to connect back to brand visibility, talent recruitment, and business development. The result was a social impact program that wasn’t separate from Flatfile’s growth story: it was part of it.
