The Career Agency Repositioning

Brand Strategy & PR Consulting

$1M scholarship program scaled from a $500K proposal. NAACP exclusive co-branded partnership initiated. Placements secured in Entrepreneur.com, Forbes, and the Wall Street Journal.

THE CLIENT

Pathrise is an online career accelerator that works with tech professionals to land better jobs, faster. The model — part coaching, part placement, with fellows paying back only when they land a role — was built for high-potential candidates who needed an edge in an increasingly competitive market. Backed by venture capital and Y Combinator alumni, Pathrise had proven its model worked. In 2022, with a tech layoff wave accelerating across the industry, the company needed both a sharper brand identity and a social responsibility strategy that matched the moment.

THE CHALLENGE

Pathrise was being perceived as another career bootcamp — a category crowded with undifferentiated competitors. The actual value proposition was meaningfully different: a career agency model built around individual fellows, not cohort-based instruction. The challenge was repositioning the brand to reflect that reality, reaching the right candidates (particularly underrepresented talent who stood to benefit most), and demonstrating Pathrise’s commitment to equitable access during a period of widespread tech industry disruption.

THE STRATEGY

The bootcamp category had a language problem: it implied a product you buy, complete, and leave behind. Thelemata’s strategic move was to pull Pathrise out of that category entirely and into a new one — the career agency. Agencies advocate for you. They don’t just teach you; they work for you. That reframe changed who Pathrise was competing with and what it was promising. Combined with a PR strategy built around using media placements as concept proof rather than just promotion, the repositioning gave Pathrise something to say that its competitors couldn’t credibly claim.

EXECUTION

Thelemata built the narrative foundation, led the scholarship initiative, and executed an integrated PR campaign:

Architected the “Career Agent” brand narrative, positioning Pathrise not as a training product but as a high-touch partner advocating for each fellow’s individual advancement

Authored a company manifesto framing Pathrise as a novel solution in direct opposition to traditional professional development products

Developed a Brand Bible to ensure messaging consistency and streamline content creation across the organization

Defined the target audience as “hidden gems” — immigrants, industry switchers, and underrepresented minorities with high potential but without the resume shorthand of ex-FAANG employees

Led the PR and partnership strategy for a scholarship initiative targeting women, LGBTQ+ professionals, veterans, job seekers with disabilities, and people of color in tech — scaling the commitment from an initial $500K proposal to $1M

Spearheaded a near-term exclusive partnership with the NAACP, proposing a co-branded press release and priority scholarship access for NAACP members

Initiated high-level partnership discussions with Vets in Tech to extend support to veterans affected by the layoffs

Executed a “Public Relations as Concept Proof” strategy — securing placements and ghostwriting founder content for Entrepreneur.com, Forbes, and the Wall Street Journal

Identified and developed a Fast Company thought leadership opportunity leveraging the angle of why veterans make exceptional tech employees

Built foundational 3-month tactical roadmaps covering goal-setting, fact sheet creation, and press outreach list development

Served as executive advisor to CEO Kevin Wu on positioning, messaging, and communications strategy

THE TAKEAWAY

Pathrise had a better model than its competitors — it just wasn’t being told as a better story. Thelemata rebuilt the narrative from the inside out: a Brand Bible that gave the team a common language, a manifesto that drew a clear line between Pathrise and the bootcamp category, and a PR strategy that used media placements as proof of the positioning rather than just promotion. The scholarship initiative did double duty — it was the right thing to do, and it gave the brand something genuinely newsworthy to say during one of the most disruptive moments the tech industry had seen in years.
