THE CLIENT
Samuel Goldwyn Films is an independent film distributor known for quality specialty releases. Thelemata worked with Samuel Goldwyn across two faith-driven theatrical campaigns — as Marketing Consultant and Content Creator on To Save a Life (2009/2010) and as Marketing Producer on The Song (2014).
THE CHALLENGE
Both films faced the defining challenge of faith-driven independent cinema: a passionate potential audience that requires trust to mobilize, not just awareness. Mass advertising doesn’t move this demographic. What moves them is showing up in the right places, through the right voices, with content that meets people where they already are.
For To Save a Life — a teen-focused drama addressing suicide prevention, cyberbullying, and high school social pressure, distributed in partnership with Outreach — the challenge was reaching teenagers through music, churches, and live events with content serious enough to land without losing them. For The Song — a cinematic retelling of the life of King Solomon, developed by City on a Hill Studio and targeting campus groups and church audiences — the challenge was making weighty dramatic themes feel worth showing up for.
THE STRATEGY
Thelemata’s approach on both films: don’t try to bring faith audiences to the movie — go to where the audience already lives. That meant the stage at live events for To Save a Life, and street teams on campuses and at churches for The Song. It meant companion content that extended the film’s conversation beyond the theater. And it meant leveraging existing music industry relationships and publication platforms to reach audiences through voices they already trusted.
EXECUTION
To Save a Life — Content, Live Marketing, and Strategic Partnerships: Thelemata served as core Marketing Consultant and Content Creator for the theatrical release.
Authored and recorded Devo2Go, an interactive devotional companion to the film, published by Zondervan — extending the film’s reach into ongoing conversation with teen audiences well beyond the opening weekend
Wrote and performed the film’s official audiobook
Executed direct-to-audience marketing from the stage at live events, driving grassroots advocacy and ticket sales through personal engagement
Leveraged music industry relationships to secure partner marketing opportunities aligned with the film’s suicide prevention and mental health themes
Promoted the film and companion devotional through a regular column and blog in Focus on the Family’s Breakaway Magazine, reaching a built-in audience of teen readers
The Song — Social Strategy and Street Team Mobilization: Thelemata led the digital and ground-level marketing effort as Marketing Producer for the limited theatrical release.
Developed and executed specialized social media content connecting the film’s dramatic themes to the faith audiences most likely to engage
Designed and deployed promotional street teams executing targeted outreach to local campus groups and churches — a decentralized approach that drove community awareness and organic word-of-mouth outside traditional media channels
Positioned the film’s heavy themes to secure high-profile endorsements
RESULTS
To Save a Life: #1 fan-rated film on Fandango during opening window. 90,000+ Facebook community mobilized. 30,000 new community members joined in a 5-day window. Devo2Go companion devotional published by Zondervan.
The Song: $1M+ domestic box office. 340-theater limited theatrical release. High-profile endorsements secured through targeted positioning.
“I have attached Zach’s script… Great stuff! I’m very happy that Zach is doing this — it will make a huge difference to the finished product!” — Kim Levings, Outreach Product Development Team
THE TAKEAWAY
Two films, two campaigns, one consistent finding: faith-driven audiences don’t respond to campaigns — they respond to community. Thelemata’s value on both To Save a Life and The Song was not media buying power. It was the ability to enter communities authentically, create content that earned trust, and activate audiences through voices they already followed. The numbers followed from that.
